A TV show or a film that portrays a good story and depicts the fashion of the period is a beautiful thing. A friend recommended me to watch “Mad Men”. I have not had the chance to watch it yet, but the glimpses of the fashion had me wanting more. Janie Bryant, the wardrobe stylist on “Mad Men”, is truly the cat’s pajamas.
Breathing exercises. These help develop lung capacity and breath support so that it is possible to play for longer periods of time without stopping for air. Set the metronome for 60 bpm. Step up to the wall until a closed fist touches both your face and the wall lightly. Place a small piece of paper in front of your mouth. Turn the metronome on and breathe in from the diaphragm for four counts. On the fifth count, release the air with a “doo” syllable. Using only air pressure, hold the small piece of paper against the wall for as long as you can, counting seconds as you go. Repeat and try to hold the paper against the wall longer. Do this five or six times. If you feel lightheaded, STOP, SIT, and breathe normally. Do not continue if you feel lightheaded.
Tampa Bay Rays (82-80) Many will forget that it was not the Yankees or Red Sox that won the American League East last year, it was the Tampa Bay Rays with a 96-66 record. However, the Rays will be hard-pressed to recover from the losses of Carl Crawford, Rafael Soriano, Carlos Pena, Jason Bartlett, and Matt Garza. Granted, they have added Manny Ramirez and Johnny Damon, which would have been huge pickups if it was four years ago. It is only fair to expect a drop off of at least 10 wins when you lose one of your top starters, your closer, and three key pieces to your lineup. But it would be a mistake to underestimate manager Joe Maddon, who I think is the best manager in baseball.

Long tones. These also help to develop lung capacity and breath support, but unlike breathing exercises, they also help to develop tone control and a full sound. With the metronome set at 60, breathe in for four counts. Play a third space C as loudly and as long as you can while holding the tone steady. Repeat this process, going down chromatically to the first space F. When you reach the F, return to C and go up to the fifth-line F. Marcel Moyse’s Crear Menú De Restaurante Sonorite has some excellent long-tone exercises. Beginning players can narrow the range if necessary, but nothing should be played softly.
Pass Rush: After a pass rush run wild against the Packers, the front seven was contained this week. I think this preseason sums up what we can expect from the pass rush. There will be some truly amazing performances, but there will also be some wild inconsistencies that make us want to pull our hair out. Ray McDonald ripping a couple sacks, followed by a couple offsides penalties. Hopefully it’s more of the former, but we’ll see.
